Major In Art dug in gamely after a backstretch duel to win the $350,000 Woodrow Wilson for two-year-old pacing colts on Friday night at the Meadowlands.
Major In Art, with Brian Sears in tow, put away the challenge of Get It Now before the three-quarter marker and held off a late bid by Mysticism for a three-quarter-length tally in 1:50.4. He paid $14.40 to win the night’s eighth race. It was two and a half lengths back to Vertigo Hanover in third.
“I knew I had a couple in there to beat,” Sears said. “I thought I might be third best at least. Eric [Goodell and Get It Now] came at me pretty hard and I thought about letting him go, but I knew he was a long shot so I used him as a blocker and it worked out well. There were times when I asked him and he didn’t want to go and then there were other times I asked him a little differently and then he responded. He’s just green and didn’t really know how to put it all together but he’s smart enough to get it done anyway.” >
The son of Art Major-Miami Spice was sold for $4,000 at the Tattersalls Mixed Sale last January and then re-sold for $35,000 at last year's Harrisburg Yearling Sale to Chester and Justin Lebo of Carlisle, PA. He improved his record to three wins in four career starts. (Meadowlands)
