Make It Brief upsets

June 10, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The top class of male and female pacers was on display Saturday night at Balmoral Park. A field of nine was sent postward in the weekly $21,500 Free For All while 10 of their female counterparts slugged it out in a $15,500 Open-Handicap.

The Free For All provided an upset as Odds On Breeding's old class horse Make It Brief found the fountain of youth rallying in the passing lane to win by a half-length in 1:50.3. Overlooked at odds of 12-1 the seven-year-old son of Camluck was able to save ground throughout the mile thanks in part to a great steer from Dean Magee.

Sent right to the front from post position four Magee elected to let last week's winner My Boy David (Ryan Anderson), the 4-5 favorite in the race, take command as the field settled onto the backstretch.

Benefiting from a perfect two-hole trip the rest of the way Magee maneuvered the career winner of more than $668,000 into the passing lane with a sixteenth of a mile to go. The Robin Schadt trainee responded like his old self blowing by the pacesetter in the final yards to get his fourth win in 17 trips postward this year. My Boy David was a hard-fought second while Life Guard On Duty (Jason Dillander) turned in another solid effort from post position 10 to be third.

In the distaff test Claudia Wright and Roger Welch's Gro turned in a super performance from post 10 to win by 1 ¼ lengths in a career best of 1:50.3.

Handled perfectly by Dave Magee, the 4-year-old daughter of Pro Bono Best floated away sixth before sweeping to the top on the backside. Once in command the Roger Welch-trained miss was all heart and determination as she held off several challenges on the far turn and throughout the stretch drive to post her seventh win in 16 starts this season. Fox Valley Fussy (Mike Oosting) rallied late to be second while 49-1 outsider Peine Bubbles (Dean Magee) rounded out the top three. (Balmoral Park)
