The 8-year-old pacer Maltese Artist suffered a catastrophic leg injury and was euthanized
Friday night at Western Fair Raceway. The son of Artiscape broke a pastern and ankle, and the attending veterinarian determined that he needed to be euthanized. He was owned by the Burke Stable LLC and James Koran.
Trained by the Burke Stable, Maltese Artist stumbled at the three-quarter pole in his elimination and was pulled up by driver Jody Jamieson.
After finishing second in a heat of the 2004 Little Brown Jug, Maltese Artist was sold at Harrisburg for $146,000. Racing for George Leon and the Burke Stable, Maltese Artist set a world record of 1:48.3 at Dover Downs in a leg of the Classic Series and scored victories in the Dan Patch and the Four Leaf Clover Series final.
In 2006 he won the Levy final at Yonkers, the Quillen Memorial at Harrington, the American-National at Balmoral Park, and the Battle of Lake Erie at Northfield.
