Maltese Artist gunning for third Beckwith

Double millionaire Maltese Artist will be gunning to become the first horse to ever win three Bert Beckwith Memorial Pace championships on Monday afternoon at Plainridge Racecourse.
 
Owned by Sylvia Burke and James Koran, Maltese Artist, who is the defending Beckwith champion as well as the winner of the 2005 event, is trained by Mickey Burke and will be driven by Bruce Ranger, who teamed with Maltese Artist in his 2005 victory. Greg Grismore drove Maltese Artist to victory last season.
 
The complete field for the 13th edition of the $75,000 Bert Beckwith Memorial Pace, in post order, includes Maltese Artist (Ranger) 3-1, Psilvuheartbreaker (Jim Meittinis) 5/2, Soul Chaser (Jason Stratton) 4-1, Rare Jewel (TBA) 5-1, All Over The Place (Richard Wojcio) 9-2, Out On A Bender (Mark Beckwith), 7-2, Sharky Osborne (David Ingraham) 6-1 and Major Deal (Pat Berry) 8-1.
 
In addition to the $75,000 Bert Beckwith Memorial Pace, the Monday holiday race card at Plainridge will include a division of the Billings Amateur series and the New England Legends event with the top stars of the region, Paul Battis, Willard Beckwith,  Peter Blood, Greg Bowden, Jim Doherty, Leigh Fitch, John Hogan,  Steve O’Toole and Bruce Ranger. Ranger, Pompano’s all-time leading driver who captured  last year’s inaugural edition of the Legends.
 
In addition, Battis will be inducted into the New England Harness Racing Wall of Fame at Plainridge. A native of Amesbury, Massachusetts and resident of Dover, New Hampshire, Battis joins Bert & Willard Beckwith,  Peter Blood, Greg Bowden, Alfred Bucky Day, Jim Doherty, Leigh Fitch, Ken Heeney, John Hogan, Gary Kamal, David Marshall, James Morrill Sr., Steve O’Toole, Bruce Ranger and Ted Wing on the wall at Plainridge.
