April 22, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Battle of Lake Erie turned into a family feud between cousins David and Brett Miller, but when the two came to the finish line it was Brett who prevailed with Maltese Artist in a world record 1:49.4 over David and God Dust Beach. Our Lucky Killiean and Peter Wrenn were third.

The two Millers went at it right from the start. Gold Dust Beach from post four and Maltese Artist from post five where head to head into the first turn. Maltese Artist took the initial lead, passing the quarter in :26.1, but Gold Dust Beach fired right back to lead the field pas the half in :53.4. After a third panel in 1:22.1, Maltese Artist took up the challenge again, the pair battled down the stretch, with Maltese Artist forging ahead in the final strides.

The time for the mile is a world record for aged gelding pacers on a half-mile track.

Owned by Sylvia Burke, John Howard and James Koran, Maltese Artist and Miller won their second Battle after finishing first in 2005. Maltese Artist also joined Peruvian Hanover and Jaguar Spur as double winners of the Battle.

The winning 6-year-old gelded son of Artiscape increased his 2007 earnings to $199,775 and his lifetime take totals $1,063,711.
