Maltese Artist continued his winning ways in the second leg of the Isle of Capri on Saturday night, nosing Special Report at the wire in 1:50.1 for driver Dave Palone and trainer Mickey Burke, while No Nonsense Yankee took the second split in 1:50.
Maltese Artist won an Isle Previevw on Feb. 9 and the first Isle leg on Feb. 16. This time he had to work to hold off Special Report, who sat on his back for the last half mile. Western Ace finished third.
Maltese Artist, a 7-year-old gelded son of Artiscape, won 13 of 27 starts and $1,053,830 last season.
N o Nonsense Yankee, with Wally Hennessey driving for trainer Mike Deters, took control of his race before the half and had an easier time winning, scooting home 2 3/4 lengths the best, with Green River Gorge second and Predator DVM third.
No Nonsene Yankee is a 5-year-old Jenna's Beach Boy gelding. Last year he won 11 of 38 starts.
Mr Feelgood, the 2006 Little BRown Jug champion, led the field at the quarter but eventually finished last and up the track. He had won an Isle leg the previous week, edging No Nonsense Yankee by a nose.
