Hall of Famer Cat Manzi drove his 13,000th winner in the third race on Wednesday night at the Meadowlands, with only Herve Filion driving more winners (15,174).
Manzi piloted 2-year-old trotter Manningly to the 1:59.4 milestone victory in the $10,000 Kindergarten Classic for his best friend, trainer Larry Rathbone. He also teamed with Rathbone to win his first million-dollar race, the 2004 North America Cup. Since his Hall of Fame induction in 2001, Manzi, 58, has enjoyed a resurgence when most athletes’ careers would be winding down.
After 30 years of driving at the Meadowlands, Manzi finally won the track’s signature event, the $1 million Meadowlands Pace, in 2006 with Artistic Fella. In 2005, Manzi’s 727 victories in the U.S. and Canada earned him the sport’s dash title for the first time in his career, along with the Driver of the Year title from both the U.S. Harness Writers Association and Harness Tracks of America.
While he has never captured the Meadowlands driving title, Manzi has been a nightly presence since the track opened its doors in 1976. The Freehold, NJ resident ranks second all-time in driving wins at the Meadowlands with 3,448, and fourth in earnings with $62 million in purses won. (Meadowlands)
