Florida's Broward County has set a date of March 8 for voting on a referendum to allow slot machines at racetracks and jai-alai fronts in the county.



If the referendum passes, slots will be allowed as early as July 1 at Pompano Park as well as Hollywood Greyhound Track, Gulfstream Park and Dania Jai Alai.



Under terms of an agreement worked out this week by the gaming industry and county commissioners, the four gaming sites must pay the county $2.5 million by Sept. 30 to cover the cost of the special election. Included in the agreement is a stipulation that the county receive $15 million to offset its costs for extra law enforcement and government services that will be needed if the referendum passes and slot machines are added, and that the cities involved receive $17 million. If slot machine revenue topped $1 billion a year then local government would receive a larger share.
