Mardi Gras fails slots test

December 13, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Florida’s Gulfstream Park has already opened its slots parlor, and Pompano Park is scheduled to join them early next year, but Mardi Gras Racetrack and Gaming Center (formerly Hollywood Greyhound Track) has had their opening delayed after failing to pass a facility test on Monday.

Inspectors from the Florida Dept. of Business and Professional Regulation and the Florida Dept. of Law Enforcement perform the tests which must be passed by the sites before they can open to the public. The day of testing includes ensuring the entire gaming operations is performed correctly.

Gulfstream Park also reportedly failed its first test on Nov. 8, but passed on the second try six days later, finally opening on Nov. 15.

According to a story in Wednesday’s Miami Herald, Mardi Grass failed 10 tests, including the detection of counterfeit currency after phony bills were passed. Also, an inspector stole a purse so the site was cited for not preventing the theft. Workers at the site also had to play the slot machines in order to verify the 85-percent payout rate mandated by the state.

Mardi Gras can now apply for another inspection but will have to wait until after Dec. 16. It has more than 1,100 slot machines, double the number at Gulfstream.
