Hypnotize had the lead when it mattered most in the featured $14,000 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace at Pompano Park on Friday, powering her way to the front in the final yards to score by a neck in 1:53.

Driven from post two by Kevin Wallis, Hypnotize settled comfortably along the pylons in third place through the early stages of the Friday feature as wagering favorite Catalina Morgan (Bruce Ranger) found the lead from post seven, carving out fractions of :27, :56.4, and 1:25.

As the pacers made their way through the final turn, Velvet Eileen
(Wally Hennessey) was moved from the pocket to wrestle the lead away from Catalina Morgan, entering the lane with a one-length advantage, with Hypnotize still tracking from third.

Velvet Eileen retained control of the race through mid-stretch, but had no answer for the eleventh-hour heroics of Hypnotize, who surged down the center of the track to claim the lead in the shadow of the wire, prevailing by a neck.

Hypnotize returned $7.80, $3.80, and $2.40 for the victory. Velvet Eileen brought in $3.80 and $3.20 for second, while Scott’s Sweety (David Ingraham) paid $2.40 for third.

Owned by Louis Diffenback, Lisa Diffenback, William Mack, Jr., and trainer Jim Mattison, Hypnotize eclipsed the $200,000 mark in lifetime earnings with her victory in the Friday feature. The daughter of Artiscape has prevailed in 11 of 35 starts this year and owns a seasonal bankroll of $94,445. (Pompano Park)
