My Star Chip 3, 1:54.2 ($383,356) and Funny Malentine 3, 1:54 ($330,140) were among the 12 mares and 12 foals that perished in an early morning fire Friday in the receiving barn at Perretti Farms in Cream Ridge, N.J. Farm spokesman Bob Marks told Harnessracing.com by cell phone as he examined the fire scene that the cause of the fire is unknown. The New Jersey State Police and Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office arson squad are investing the cause.

The fire was discovered at 1 a.m. Friday morning. "Our nightly foaling man noticed some smoke, quickly called up. Several of our people live in a house right close to it, and they went running out. Unfortunately, smoke inhalation had already taken the horses and suddenly the barn went up."

Marks, who said farm owner Bill Perretti was at his winter home in Florida, did not have a complete list of mares killed in the fire, but that he would make that list known soon.
