Three-time Dan Patch Award winner Loyal Opposition opened her 2006 campaign with a 1:51.3 victory in the $35,000 second round of the Cape & Cutter Series on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

In the same race, Stonebridge Kisses, who fell and unseated driver Yannick Gingras before the half, suffered a left hind leg laceration. Gingras emerged unscathed.

"I'm fine," Gingras said as he was checked out in the Meadowlands Medical Unit. "She just stumbled. I thought the way she went down that she broke a leg but when she got up, she ran off sound. I love that mare. I was glad to see she was okay."

Loyal Opposition, driven by Andy Miller and trained by Erv Miller, extended her winning streak to eight with a half-length victory over entrymate Restive Hanover. It was a length and a half to Burning Point, who had cut the mile and held on for third.

Loyal Opposition posted her 45th career victory in her 74th start. The 6-year-old mare, owned by Daniel Waxman, has earned $2.5 million lifetime. A divisional champion at two, she was honored as Pacing Mare of the Year in both 2004 and 2005.

The $88,610 Cape & Cutter final is Feb. 24.
