Marohn in spill at Colonial

October 04, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Driver Jim Marohn Jr. escaped serious injury from a scary chain-reaction spill in the sixth race at Colonial Downs Tuesday night, Oct. 3. Marohn was taken to Bon Secours Memorial Regency Medical Center in nearby Mechanicsville. X-rays were negative and he was released Tuesday night with a headache and a bruised lower back.

The accident occurred around the five-sixteenths pole as Five Somewhere, racing along the rail second, came out slightly to hit Millers Sunset, who was racing third on the outside. Millers Sunset tripped and threw Marohn forward. Southwind Seager was right behind Millers Sunset and could not avoid the fallen horse, unseating driver Jewett Pumphrey.

Pumphrey emerged unscathed and both horses appeared to escape the incident without serious injuries.

Marohn was the leading driver at Colonial in both 2004 and 2005. The 24-year-old came into Tuesday’s program as the second leading driver here this meet.

Marohn started the card with a high note, guiding Ashland Blue to a track and world record setting win in the first race. Ashland Blue paced the mile in 1:51, eclipsing Melina Mercouri’s old mark of 1:51.1 for 4-year-old pacing mares.
