Maryland horseman Bob Christian dies

Robert "Bob" Joseph Christian Sr., 69, of Delmar died Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at Coastal Hospice at the Lake in Delmar.
 
He was born Feb. 26, 1940, in Philadelphia, a son of the late John and Margaret Hollowell Christian.
 
Bob loved being around horses and worked as a Standardbred trainer for more than 32 years. He was an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Delmar. Memberships also included the Delmar Kiwanis Club, the Delaware Standardbred Association, the Maryland Cloverleaf Association and the U.S. Trotting Association. He loved watching sports and was an avid Baltimore Orioles and Ravens fan.
 
He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Phyllis Joyce Christian; a son, Robert Joseph Christian Jr. of Chestertown, Md.; four grandchildren, Benjamin Phillip Christian of Catonsville, Md., Stephanie Ann Christian of Easton, Harrison Bartholomew Christian of Crumpton, Md., and Jonathan Peter Christian of Crumpton; a great-grandson, Robert Patrick Davis of Elkton; two brothers, John Harry Christian of Loganville, Ga., and James Richard Christian of Waverly Hall, Ga.; and a very dear friend, Rhonda Tingle of Millsboro. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
 
Bob campaigned many of his homebreds in the Delmava area, which included Walk that Walk, Benarama, and Jon Harris.  Bob had a special connection with Walk that Walk, in the pre-slot era in the Delmarva area, Walk that Walk made $123,347 with a mark of 1:54.1 competing with other open pacers.  Bob also owned such horses as Toy Power, Quit Joshing, and Ivanader.
 
A memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, Grove Street in Delmar. The Rev. Custer Ruley will officiate.
 
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to All Saints Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 88, Delmar, Del. 19940.
 
Arrangements are in the care of Short Funeral Home, Delmar.
