June 07, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Jon Win [$2.10, $2.10, $2.10] trotted wire to wire in 1:57.1, winning a $10,200 division of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund for three-year-old colts and geldings at Rosecroft Raceway on Friday.

Driven by Victor Kirby, the Chip Chip Hooray gelding sped off of the gate to take the field through quarters of 30.0, 59.2 and 1:28.2, winning by over two lengths with a last quarter of 28.4. Jeff Long trains for owner Charlene Long.

Juanita [$2.10, $2.10, $2.10] continued her win streak in a $10,700 division for trotting fillies, crossing under the wire two-and-a-half lengths ahead of the rest in 1:58.4. The daughter of CR Commando was handy through fractions of 28.3, 1:00.2 and 1:30.0 with a last quarter of 28.4. Jim Morand drove the winner of nearly $260,000 lifetime to her fifth straight win this year. Les Givens trains, and the filly is co-owned by Morand and Nanticoke Racing Inc.

Other notable finishes include SJ’s Reel Girl [$7.80, $6.60, $2.60] in a $10,700 division for fillies; the SJ’s Photo filly won by two lengths after trotting second-over with Mark Gray at her lines. With a last quarter of 30.3, the trainee of Nancy Lisi hit another gear to win in 1:59.3. Arthur Lisi owns SJ’s Reel Girl.

In the other $10,200 division for colts and geldings, Man Of Science [$4.40, $2.10, $2.10] trotted gate-to-wire in 1:58.4 under the guidance of driver Brandon Givens. The CR Commando gelding held strong through quarters of 29.0, 1:00.4 and 1:30.4 to win by half of a length. Les Givens trains for owners Brandon Givens and Walter Blacharski.

Post time is at 5:00 p.m. tonight, and several divisions of the Maryland Standardbred Race Fund for three-year-old pacers are carded.

Both Sheer Brilliance at 6/5 early odds and Quick Thinker at 7/5 morning line odds are standouts in the $22,700 division for colts and geldings. Quick Thinker, a second-place finisher to Sheer Brilliance last week, paced in 1:50.4 with a 26.4 last quarter. Les Givens trains the Glowing Tribute colt for owners Jim Morand and Nanticoke Racing Inc. Brandon Givens will drive the colt from post two.

Sheer Brilliance set a new record last week, pacing in 1:50.4 with Victor Kirby in the bike. The Blissful High gelding, a trainee of Jeff Long, has been impressive this season, winning six of nine starts. Jeff Long co-owns the colt with J Paul Long.

Two divisions for fillies are also scheduled; Talk All Day, a winner last week, will open on the board at 6/5 odds for trainer-driver David Wade. The Western Hanover filly, owned by the Sweet & Sassy Stable, scored a six-and-a-quarter length victory last week, winning in 1:54.0.

Southern Blue was a winner in her division last week as well, and will open up at 6/5 odds. Owned and trained by Gerald Kelly, the Nuclear High filly won in 1:53.3 last time out with a 28.4 final quarter. Brandon Givens will drive from post five. (Rosecroft)
