Maryland voters approve slots while Ohio votes against casino

Voters in Ohio Tuesday soundly defeated a proposal to legalize a single casino, to be located between Cincinnati and Columbus, while voters in Maryland approved slot machines at five locations in the state. In Massachusetts, voters elected to ban Greyhound racing, effectively putting two dog tracks in the state out of business.

Final voting in Ohio showed 62.8 percent of the voters voted “no” to the casino proposal, with 37.2 percent voting “yes.” Of Ohio’s 88 counties, only five voted to approve the proposal.

In Maryland, 59 percent of the vote went to approve the legalization of slot machines, with the “no” votes at 41 percent. A total of 15,000 slot machines will be divided among five locations, including Ocean Downs. Rosecroft Raceway is not included although the track will receive part of the seven percent of the slot revenue that is targeted for purses.

Both Raynham and Taunton Greyhound tracks will now have to close in 2010 after voters in Massachusetts voted by a margin of about 56-44 percent to ban pari-mutuel Greyhound racing.

In Maine, a voting machine error delayed the results in Scarborough until late Wednesday morning but voters have reportedly turned down by the margin of about 300 votes a proposal to allow Scarborough Downs to add slot machines.

The error reportedly occurred when officials were tabulating about 6,600 absentee ballots through a voting machine when the machine suddenly reset to zero. Because voters each cast four separate ballots the re-do process took through the night. To ensure accuracy, all of the nearly 12,000 votes were recounted.
