Mcarts N Crafts surprises in 1:53.2 Sweetheart

McArts N Crafts was a game first-over winner in the $441,750 Sweetheart Pace for 2-year-old filly pacers at the Meadowlands Friday night.

Driven by Steve Smith, McArts N Crafts pressured Worldly Treasure into submission past the final turn and held on for a 1:53.2 victory.  It was three-quarters of a length back to Knock Three Times, who maneuvered around stretch traffic after being shuffled back early.  Sunshine Sister capitalized on a second-over trip behind the winner to finish third.

McArts N Crafts paid $25.40 as she picked up her first career win.   Haralabos Giannoulis of New Milford, New Jersey trains and owns the filly.   McArts N Crafts was a $12,000 yearling buy at the New Jersey Classic Sale.

"The two [horses] that I wanted to follow actually were still in front of me, so I had to do a little work to get to the lead," Smith said.   "George [Brennan and Worldly Treasure] had a little trouble clearing and then he turned Yannick [Gingras and Wall Of Art] loose.   Then at the same time, he had a little trouble clearing, so everybody did a little bit of work.   My filly wanted to clear a little bit earlier, but she got a little crooked around the last turn.   I heard [Sunshine Sister] breathing down my back, and we turned in and I didn't hear her anymore.   She [Mcarts N Crafts] hasn't really gotten much respect from anybody.   We've taken care of her, raced her light.   Bob [Giannoulis] hasn't trained her hard in between.   He wants to make sure he has a filly for the whole year and he's done a great job.   We took one shot and raced her tonight."
