Heavy rains trounced downtown The night’s fourth race, a $6,000 late-closing event for colt pacers, was won by Charismatic, a 3-year-old son of Western Ideal. Andrew McCarthy grabbed leather as the gate sprung and settled his charge into third as the field headed around the opening turn. Charismatic stayed nestled in third until McCarthy accelerated out off the cones in the stretch drive to sprint by his rivals with a 27-second final quarter, stopping the timer in a new lifetime mark, 1:52.4. Charismatic is trained by Noel Daley for the Brittany Farms and Daisy Acres. He was a winner for the fourth time in his eighth career start. Also stopping the timer in impressive fashion over the sloppy track was On The Catwalk, winner of the night’s ninth race, a $6,000 late-closing event for filly and mare pacers. The 3-year-old daughter of Pro Bono Best parlayed a pocket trip into a winning time of 1:52.3, a new lifetime mark. McCarthy was back in the bike for trainer Erv Miller. On The Catwalk was a winner for the second time this season for the Riverview Farms, Steve Stewart, the Ervin Miller Stable, and Michael Sofer. McCarthy, who took both of the above mentioned late-closers with 7-1 upset winners, ended up with three wins on the night. (Red Mile)
