McDermott's luck of Irish

Return Home
March 18, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Police officer-turned trainer John McDermott had all the luck of the Irish Thursday afternoon at Monticello Raceway as he directed Trotting Rabbit to a 4 ½-length victory in the St. Paddy Pace.

Although Trotting Rabbit had won his last three races on the front end, McDermott elected to come from behind with his charge and the strategy paid off with a 2:02.3 victory. Row Urboat Hanover and driver Gary Messenger finished second with Muller and Jim Doherty third.

The race was to have pitted McDermott against his brother Kevin for the first time but the latter's horse was scratched.

"I wish my brother Kevin was driving the horse that got parked out so I could have taunted him," McDermott said. "We trained together many times but we've never driven in a race against one another and it also would have been fun beating him."
