McIntosh appeals positive

Ontario-based trainer Doug McIntosh has received a six-month suspension from the Illinois Racing Commission after the filly trotter Strong Tea had a positive test after winning the $160,000 American-National final at Balmoral Park last November. McIntosh, who has never before had a positive test in his 30-plus years of training, told The Horseman Tuesday afternoon he has already appealed and has been granted a stay.



"This is a kick in the butt when you know you're innocent," McIntosh said, noting also that Strong Tea one of two O'Brien divisional finalists with Solveig, had to be taken out of consideration for the award.



The positive was for Mepivacaine, a local anaesthetic drug that is widely used in equine medicine. It is a Class 2 drug according to the Association of Racing Commissioners International.
