Md. nearing slots bill

The Maryland state Senate is expected to pass a bill Thursday that would permit 15,500 slot machines at seven sites in the state, including four racetracks. However, the Maryland House of Delegates have reportedly have a compromise bill that precludes slot machines from being added at Rosecroft Raceway or Pimlico Park Thoroughbred track.

Although delegates from Prince George's County, the home of Rosecroft, made an attempt to add an amendment to the Senate bill that would keep the machines out of that county, it was rejected. But the House of Delegates considered that request in the crafting of its bill.

"At this stage in the game, Prince George's County is off limits," House Speaker Michael Busch was quoted as saying in Thursday's Washington Post. "I said to those delegates, if you don't want them there, they will not go there, period."

The stance of the Prince George's County delegates and the uncertainty of the slots bill reportedly was the cause of the collapse earlier this week of a $13 million agreement by the family of Baltimore Orioles owner Peter G. Angelos to purchase Rosecroft.
