The Meadowlands' Friday night card was canceled after the eighth race when severe lightning and a thunderstorm struck the East Rutherford area of New Jersey. Lightning had flashed to the north for about 45 minutes before the storm moved toward the track, but after both the Woodrow Wilson and Sweetheart finals were contested.
There were four races left on the Friday program before its cancellation, including the second $50,000 division of the Townsend Ackerman for 3-year-old trotters. Bayside Volo, who finished sixth in his Hambletonian elimination last Saturday and failed to advance to the final, won the first Townsend Ackerman split in 1:54 for driver Mike Lachance, trainer Anne Schlichtig and owner Richard Schwartz.
