Peter Koch, the new director of racing at the Meadowlands, has told harnessracing.com that although purses for the upcoming fall meet are lower than in the past, there will be an increase when the calendar turns to January 2009.
“There was an overpayment in ’07 and we spent quite a bit last winter, so to balance out the year we had to open them up lower,” Koch explained of the lower purse structure for November-December. “But the purses are definitely going to go up in January.” The Meadowlands opens its 18-day fall meet Friday, Nov. 21, with the first two programs filled with Breeders Crown eliminations and the eight rich finals for 2 and 3 year olds scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29.
