MEC asks for MI extension

Magna Entertainment Corp. officials have asked for an extension for building a new dual-breed racetrack in Romulus, Mich., near Metro Airport. MEC officials have been in Michigan this week to discuss its license application in separate meetings with city officials and Michigan Racing Commissioner Robert Geake, whose term expires Dec. 31 and had hopes of granting a license before that date.



A Romulus councilman has been quoted as saying that Magna officials told him that if they were granted the track license, they would not begin construction now until 2006 with live racing not commencing until 2009.



The likely reason for the delay is the Nov. 2 passage of Proposal 1, which requires statewide and local voter approval for any new gambling operations in the state, including adding slot machines at the tracks.
