Med Davis Jr. dies

L. Medford Davis, 83, of Smyrna, Del., died Sunday in the Harbor Healthcare Center in Lewes, Del.

Mr. Davis was born March 31, 1925 in Clayton, Del., the son of the late J. Medford and Mary Ella Thomas Davis. He was a proud lifelong grain and dairy farmer and a Standardbred horseman residing in the area his entire life.

He was an accomplished Standardbred horse owner, trainer and breeder. He started his harness racing career in 1968 and over the years campaigned at Brandywine, Liberty Bell, Harrington, Rosecroft, Freehold, Freestate, the Meadowlands and Dover Downs.

Mr. Davis was active in his community and was a member of the Delaware Farm Bureau, the Smyrna School Board, Asbury United Methodist Church, the United States Trotting Association and was a past president of the Lions Club.

He is survived by two sons, Medford (Cathy) and Ray (Linda); three daughters, Joan (Bob) Dathe, Susan Durham, and Gail (Greg) Mack; sister, Serena Kalar; brother, Irving; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; brothers, George and Carlton; sister, Catherine Still; grandson, Jason Durham; and great-granddaughter, Allison.

Services will be Wednesday, Jan. 14, at 12 noon in Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 West Mt. Vernon Street, Smyrna, Del., where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna, Del.

Memorial contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 330, Smyrna, Del. 19977.
