Mediation agreed in Ontario

February 21, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The Ontario Harness Horse Association (OHHA) and Great Canadian Gaming, owners of Georgian Downs, have agreed to take their differences which have kept the track from racing in 2007 to a mediator and then possibly to arbitration. The OHHA issued the following release Wednesday that read in part:

Over 100 Ontario Harness Horse Association members attended last night's meeting in Barrie to hear and update from OHHA president Jim Whelan on the progress of contract talks with Great Canadian Gaming, owners of Georgian Downs.

After a long and meaningful discussion OHHA members agreed to take the next step to contract negotiations by going to mediation talks with Great Canadian Gaming. The two sides have agreed on a mediator and talkes have been scheduled for Feb. 27 and March 1. If mediation is not successful OHHA members have overwhelmingly supported going then to arbitration where a final decision would be made.

"OHHA members stood up strongly tonight and said we are united in our fight for a fair contract with Great Canadian Gaming," said OHHA president Whelan. "This is about the future and stability of our industry. We need a multi-year cohntract that does not subtract race dates from our current program."
