Med Vac charges over slop

June 03, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Med Vac [$40.80, $13.80, $3.00] charged down a rain-soaked stretch to win the featured $35,000 open trot, the sixth race, on Friday night at the Meadowlands in 1:54. Driven by David Miller, Med Vac bested Elegant Man [$7.20, $2.60] by a half-length, while it was a length back to 4-5 favorite Lhasa Muscles [$2.20] in third.

“He races better if you take him off the pace, as of right now,” Miller said. “It's still early in the year. I had no question what I was going to do. I had a couple breakers [horses who broke stride] and I got to sit in a long ways. He raced very well though. This was his third start back this year and he's showing some promise.”

It was the first win in three tries this season for 4-year-old Med Vac, who returned to the races in May after a seven-month layoff. He improved his career slate to 11 wins in 29 starts and $369,917 in earnings. Trained by Brendan Johnson and owned by Adam Victor & Son Stable of New York, New York, Med Vac is being pointed for the $240,000 estimated Titan Cup on July 1 [eliminations are June 23]. Victor purchased the son of CR Commando privately for $165,000 from trainer Syl King in June 2004. He bought multi-millionaire Mr Muscleman from King in a similar deal two years earlier. Coincidentaly, both colts were bargain yearlings – Mr Muscleman sold for $2,000, while Med Vac fetched $5,200.

Earlier in the evening, The Queen Of Trash extended her winning streak to five in a $39,050 division of the New Jersey Sire Stakes for 3-year-old pacing fillies. Trained by Les Givens, the daughter of Cam's Card Shark lowered her lifetime mark to 1:50.4 in the evening's fifth race. She is owned by the partnership of Brandon Givens, Donna Messick and Nanticoke Racing Inc.

Ideal Weather dominated in the other NJSS split, tearing off a :26.4 final quarter to win by 3 ˝ lengths in 1:52.1.

Runner-up in last week’s Miss New Jersey, Ideal Weather and Yannick Gingras commandeered the front past the quarter and never looked back.

Ideal Weather, a filly by Western Ideal, is owned by Sylvia Burke, Tom Cherichello and Larry Karr and trained by Mickey Burke.
