Voters in Miami-DadeCounty in Florida on Tuesday approved a referendum that will allow for Calder Racecourse, Flagler Dog Track and Miami Jai Alai to add slot machines. The referendum, which was defeated in 2005, the year BrowardCounty approved slots at tracks including PompanoPark, was passed by margin of about 2-1.
''This is the happiest, greatest day of my life,'' Isadore Havenick, a vice president for Flagler Dog Track, was quoted as saying in the Miami Herald. "We've worked so hard for years. This is all we've talked about...I feel like we won the Super Bowl.''
Calder, Flager and the jai-alai fronton will be allowed to install up to 2,000 slot machines each.
