Veteran Michigan-based horseman Dan Taneyhill, a longtime owner who turned to training his own horses a couple of years ago, died at the age of 50 after racing Saturday night at Windsor Raceway.

Taneyhill, who owns the training center Taneyhill Stables in Swartz Creek, Mich., had just gotten back to the farm after having three wins and a second in four starts that night at Windsor when he was stricken. He was unloading the horses with driver Marc St. Louis Jr. when he collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack.

Among Tanneyhill's best-known and successful horses was Whataterrificfella, who earned more than $200,000, finishing second in the Michigan Sire Stakes final in 2001 as a 2 year old. Tanneyhill began training his own horses in 2007, posting 58 wins in 468 starts and amassing $331,261 in purse earnings. Last year he had 43 wins in 388 starts and $182,410 in purse earnings.
