Groundbreaking for the new Pinnacle Thoroughbred Race Course in suburban Detroit took place April 4, and now Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has announced $41.6 million in state and local taxes to use for the clean up of the 240 acres the track is being built on.
"This project is exciting news for Michigan's sport, entertainment and tourism industries," Granholm said in a press release. "Not only will it create jobs, it will serve as a catalyst to new growth as the Pinnacle Aeropark unfolds south of Detroit Metropolitan Airport."
The racetrack, which is scheduled to open July 18, will replace a void in Thoroughbred racing in the metro-Detroit area since Ladbroke Detroit Racecourse closed its doors in the late 1990s. Thoroughbred racing then shifted to Great Lakes Downs (formerly Muskegon Harness Raceway) on the western border of the state, which Magna closed down last last year.
The new racetrack is being built by longtime horseman and banker Jerry Campbell and his wife, Lisa, who operate as Post It Stables. The track is in Wayne County at I-275 near Sibley, with the county already having invested $28 million in infrastructure in the area.
