Michigan slots appears dead

November 03, 2004 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The prospects of slot machines at Michigan's racetracks took a direct hit Tuesday when voters in the state easily passed Proposal 1, which requires statewide and local voter approval of any gambling expansion. Although both chambers of the state legislature voted to allow slot machines at the tracks earlier this year, Proposal 1 is retroactive back to Jan. 1, thus rendering those votes meaningless.

Both the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press reported early Wednesday morning that with 30 percent of the state's vote counted, Proposal 1 was leading 60 percent to 40 percent. The only exemptions to the proposal would be casinos operated by the Indian tribes and the three casinos located in downtown Detroit.

The passage of the proposal also threatens the state lottery and the monies it funds public schools. Because of that scenario, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm taped several TV ads pleading with voters to reject the proposal.
