August 20, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Longtime Michigan horseman Rolland “Otis” Boring, the brother of Wolverine State Hall of Famer Chris Boring, died Tuesday. He was 65.

Mr. Boring was born June 6, 1943 to James “Leon” and Helen Boring in Indianapolis, Ind. On Jan. 26, 1965 he married Penelope Sue Head, settling in Adrian and raising seven children, his most proud accomplishment. Mr. Boring spent his entire life in harness racing. He was a trainer, driver and equipment salesman, ending his career as the identifier at Toledo’s Raceway Park. He cherished all of the friendships he made along the way.

He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association, Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Mr. Boring is survived by his wife, Penny; brother Chris (Joyce) Boring; sister Dee (Steve) McMullen; three daughters, Julie Hopkins (Bob Burch), Heidi (Norm) Myers, Bonnie (Derek LaRatta); four sons, Brian (Kelly), Travis (Amanda Ream), Eric and Jason (Megan); 14 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His family was always the most important thing is his life and, near the end, his grandchildren brought a joy to his life that even surprised him. He was preceded in death by his parents and mother and father-in-law.

The family is being served by the Braun Everiss Wagley Funeral Home, 1501 W. Maumee St., Adrian, Mich. 49221 (517) 265-8182. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 22 from 1 to 8 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 305 Division St., Adrian, Mich. on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association Scholarship Fund.
