Michigan's Walker wins Billings split at Hazel Park

Return Home
June 23, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Maybe it was that Kelly “Sky” Walker had home track advantage or maybe he had the best trotter in the race--as testified by the betting public--but for whatever reason the Davison, Mich. farmer put a hurtin’ on his competitors when he guided Rush N Supreme to a 1:58.3 victory  in the CKG Billings Amateur Trot at Hazel Park Raceway on Monday night.

The battle of the Billings there turned out to be a contest between two Michiganders, Walker and his dear friend Steve” You’re Never Too” Oldford, a sales rep from  Croswell, Mich.

Walker’s trotter, Rush N Supreme was sent off as the 3-2 favorite from post position six in the race while Oldsford’s Eng-Amer Bobby, from post two, was second choice at  odds of 9-5. But when the gate sprung Walker sent his charge  for the lead while Oldford took as tuck behind the number one horse Likaty, driven by Mike “the Mortgage Man” Mitchell.

Walker’s trotter never did gain command early and was kept on the limb by Mitchell until Rush N Supreme  trotted by the leader after the half. From there Walker played catch me if you can and though Oldford sent Eng-Amer Bobby out to challenge after Rush N Supreme had cleared,  they never could make up much ground and they chased the winner home to finish second, some two lengths behind Rush N Supreme. Absolute Revolve, who had a good covered trip along the pylons the entire way didn’t fire at all for driver “Trader Bud” Hatfield  and they chugged home in third place, some seven lengths behind the winner.

For “Sky” Walker it marked his first Billings driving victory of the season and his fourth overall in 14 starts. In his only other Billings drive this year Walker finished second to Oldford at Flamboro Downs on May 31.

Rush N Supreme, trained by Tim Driver for June DuRussel, paid $5 for win. (CKG Billings)
