The Michigan Department of Agriculture has advised the Michigan Harness Horsemen’s Association (MHHA) that money for racing purses and programs will be released soon, which averts racing coming up empty later in the year. Last week the MHHA expressed concern that a state budget impasse could hold up funds that are used for purses and breeders awards. A budget impasse between Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the state legislature led to the freezing of all state grant monies and disbursements from restricted funds, including the Agricultural Equine Fund, which provides money for purses, county fairs and breeders awards.
