Harnessracing.com has learned that trainer Mickey Burke has reached agreement with the New Jersey Racing Commission that calls for him to serve a four-month suspension and be fined $2,500 for two lidocaine positives on horses dating back to late 2006 and early 2007 at the Meadowlands. In addition, Burke has agreed to voluntarily surrender his trainer license at the conclusion of his suspension, which is scheduled to run from July 8 through Nov. 8.
The first lidocaine positive came on Doggone Incredible on Dec. 9, 2006, a race in which the pacer finished second. The announcement of the positive came at the same time the U.S. Harness Writers Association announced that Burke was voted the Glen Garnsey Trainer of the Year award. The second positive test came March 22, 2007, on the winning horse Smashingpringipisa
All of the Burke Stable's horses have been racing under trainer Ron Burke's name this year as the elder Burke turned to solely training young horses, which doesn't require a training license.
