Mildred Williams, the veteran female harness driver who was the inspiration for the Mildred Williams International Driving Series, died on Wednesday in a hospital in Ottawa, Ont., afer a brief illness with her daughter Heather and grandson Munro at her side. She was 92.
In 2006, 2007 and 2008, the Mildred Williams International Driving Series was named after the veteran reinswoman. The Mildred Williams International Driving Series is currently taking place in North America to great success and fanfare.
The last time Williams attended the horse races was in Montreal in 2007 at the Mildred Williams finals. She was brought to the winner's circle in a horse-drawn carriage to join the women who pay homage to her at many charity fundraising events. The series, which generates money primarily for breast cancer, raised $92,000 at various racetracks in 2007. At Williams' request, there will be no wake or funeral. There will be a memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to: • The Ottawa Humane Society
