Miss Color Chip wins in 1:56.1

Miss Color Chip burst through an opening in the stretch and rocketed past 9-5 favorite Windsun Lane to win the $49,500 Charles Singer Memorial on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Driver Tim Tetrick hustled Miss Color Chip to the lead around the first turn, then yielded to Windsun Lane down the backstretch.  The duo was trapped on the rail until a seam opened mid-stretch, allowing them to fly past the leader for a two-length win.  One of three fillies in the field, Miss Color Chip trotted the mile in 1:56.1.  She paid $9.20 to win.

Third-place finisher Sierra’s Dream was disqualified for violating the breaking rule in the stretch.  K-Roc inherited the show spot.

“It was pretty hairy in there,” Tetrick said.  “I let Ron [Pierce and Windsun Lane] go and he jammed up the third quarter, which was expected.  My mare likes to sit up close.  She’s got good, active gait speed and everything.  She’s pretty simple to drive, just don’t let a lot of dirt hit her in the face.  I didn’t know for sure [that I would win] until I got by him [Windsun Lane], which if that’s the case, you don’t win until you’re the first one to the wire.  She’s a nice mare and I knew if I had got out in time and had a shot at racing her I had a pretty good confidence I could get there.”

Miss Color Chip, trained by Mickey Burke, improved her record to 11 wins in 26 starts this season.  The daughter of Chip Chip Hooray was a recent purchase by Frank Baldachino of Clarksburg, N.J. and David Scharf of New York, N.Y.

“It was a private purchase a few weeks back and it’s turned out real well, so we couldn’t be happier,” Baldachino said.  “You never really want to race against the boys, but she was eligible for the series so we took a shot and put her in there.  She has a series coming up at Chester, after this, then she goes up to Canada for the Lifetime Dream Series at Woodbine in January.  Then, we’ll probably give her some time off and bring her back as a 4-year-old and hope she comes back even sharper.” (Meadowlands)
