Joseph Muscara’s Mister Big used a strong late kick to capture the $342,000 U.S. Pacing Championship Saturday in a lifetime best 1:47.4. The four year old overtook favorite Lis Mara late in the stretch to win while Maltese Artist charged home late to finish second. When the gate folded Maltese Artist and Boulder Creek each left for the lead. Tim Tetrick and Boulder Creek would take the point before clicking off a :25.3 quarter. Mypanmar and Tony Morgan made a big backside brush to the lead, passing the half if :53.3 before leading the field to the three-quarter-mile marker. Lis Mara, moving first up for Brian Sears, assumed the lead in the stretch, but could not turn back Mister Big. The son of Grinfromeartoear dashed past the favorite for David Miller as Maltese Artist closed to his outside. Lis Mara finished third. Bred by Kentuckiana Farms, Mister Big has earned more than $850,000 this season for trainer Virgil Morgan Jr. The victory was his 10th in 19 seasonal starts. Click here for the video of the race.
