According to reports on social media, Modern Family, the fourth-place finisher in Saturday night's $603,000 Maple Leaf Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, collapsed and died in the paddock after the race.
Modern Family was driven by Ron Pierce from post 10 in the Maple Leaf, which was won in an upset by Intimidate over Sebastian K.
A 5-year-old son of Cantab Hall, Modern Family was trained and co-owned by Daryl Bier in partnership with Charles Dombeck and Richard Poilluci. A 19-time winner in 51 career starts, Modern Family had career earnings of more than $550,000.
Modern Family's biggest wins this year came in the $100,000 Hambletonian Maturity at the Meadowlands and $200,000 Charlie Hill Memorial at Scioto Downs.
Modern Family is the second star lost in the Bier Stable in a little more than a month. Bier's horse, the 4-year-old trotter Punxsutawney, a winner of more than $300,000, died as a result of injuries sustained in a June 12 accident in a qualifier at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. Bier suffered a broken pelvis in the spill.
