Monday's Dover action

February 28, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Keystone Rodeo ground out an impressive win in the $35,000 Preferred Handicap Pace at Dover Downs Monday night, winning in 1:51.3.

Action was fast and furious on the front end, as Mark's Secret Love (Tony Morgan), Bobnoxious (Tim Curtin), and Dreamfair Titan (Ron Pierce) all held the lead at one point by the half in :54.4. Brad Hanners waited his turn, pulling Keystone Rodeo from fifth to race first-over for the rest of the mile.

Keystone Rodeo was just a quarter-length behind Dreamfair Titan at the 1:23.3 three-quarters, but drew off in the stretch before nearly being caught by a zooming Casimir Bad Boy (Eddie Davis Jr.), who finished second by half a length. Mark's Secret Love finished third.

The 6-year-old son of Western Hanover has won four of eight starts and $79,025 this year for owners Fred and Anita Fialkow and trainer Don Kowalski.

Black Cat Bone notched a repeat in the $32,000 Delaware Special Monday night, winning this time in 1:53.

Technically, it was not a wire-to-wire victory, as Clinton Debriefed (Ross Wolfenden) nosed out a peek at the front end at the three-quarters in 1:24.4. Black Cat Bone (Ron Pierce) disposed of him, hanging on by a head over a swooping Build a Fire (Brandon Givens) and E Shopper (Jim Morand).

Black Cat Bone is a 9-year-old son of Sportsmaster. He is owned and trained by Erika Pardee.

Dover's $26,000 Open Pace was a race for those off the pace, as Beware Beret turned a three-wide move into a 1:52 win.

They were four-in and four-out at the half in :55.1 with Nvincbl Artist (Brad Hanners) on top. Once the field reached the three-quarters in 1:23, Ross Wolfenden sent Beware Beret around the leaders, followed closely by Crystal Art (Jim Morand), who was sitting in eighth. Beware Beret won by 1 ½ lengths over Crystal Art with Honest Lawyer (Kevin Sizer) third.

Beware Beret has won two Opens in a row for owner-trainer J. P. Callahan. The 6-year-old son of Green Beret has won an even $26,000 this year.
