How would you like to own a world record? Well it could be as easy as winning the Monticello Marathon on Monday afternoon, Dec. 15, when the track will offer a 1-3/4 mile trot in which the current world record on a half-mile track is 3:45.2.
The current world mark is owned by a trotter named Poppa IM, who was driven to victory by Jack Rice at Monticello Raceway on Dec. 28, 1998.
“We were thinking about having a two-mile trot, which we have done in the past, but a chance at world record may be an enticement to attract entries,” said Eric Warner, Monticello Raceway’s Director of Racing. “The world mark for two miles in a race on a half mile track is 4:10:1/5 set by the great trotter Pronto Don in 1951 at the old Roosevelt Raceway and two consecutive miles in 2:05 or better might be out of reach for most trotters but the 3:45:2 for one and three quarter miles seems more attainable.”
Warner is currently seeking trotters to compete in the event. Anyone interested in racing in the Monticello Marathon or wanting more information about the race is asked to contact Warner in the tracks racing office by calling 845-794-4100x557. Or they can contact the tracks publicity office at extension 455. (Monticello Raceway)
