More Review stakes were contested at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield on Tuesday. Among the winners was Ax Man, a 2-year-old gelding by Tom Ridge, who trotted his last quarter in :26.4 to win in 2:02.3.
Ax Man is trained by Peter Wrenn, but was driven by Brandon Simpson. Simpson kept the tempo slow after reaching the quarter in :30. Ax Man loafed to the half in 1:03--a :33 second quarter--and hit the three-quarter mark in 1:35.4 before sprinting home for the win.
In his previous start Ax Man finished third in an Arden Downs stakes at The Meadows, trotting his own mile in 1:59.4.
Wrenn's wife, Melanie, owns Ax Man in partnership with Gene Oldford. They paid $26,000 for the horse as a yearling at Lexington last fall and with the win in the $27,500 Greyhound Review and previous races, the youngster has earned them $27,900.
The Review for 2-year-old trotting fillies was just a two-horse race and Queen Jane, a filly by Chocolatier, prevailed in 2:06.4 for Travis Seekman.
The Review for 3-year-old colt trotters was only a three-horse race and Arts Fav Won and Brandon Simpson finished first in 1:56.1. Jodi Siamis owns the son of Artsplace who was raced by Ivan Sugg as a 2 year old.
The Review for 3-year-old filly pacers, worth $15,000, was captured by Ellamakailey, a filly by the Illinois sire Park Place. Travis Seekman put the filly on the engine and she put away a brief challenge by Hot Little Number to win in 1:55.2. Steven Leita owns the filly, who picked up her fourth win of the season.
