More slots politics in PA

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has reported that Pennsylvania state Rep. Mike Veon is trying to change the state’s slots law in order to convert the seventh and final racetrack/casino license into a non-racetrack, free-standing casino. Veon is the second-ranking Democrat in the House.

“I am exploring every option,” Veon said of his plans.

According to the Post-Gazette report, converting the final racetrack/casino license to a stand-alone license is a time sensitive issue. The legislature must enact a new state budget by Saturday, the start of the new fiscal year, and then will recess until fall. It is also likely that other legislators would protest Veon’s plans for a stand-alone casino that would be restricted to his district.

Last week Commonwealth Court ordered the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission to reconsider the Bedford Downs racetrack application, but not one filed by Valley View Downs. Plans called for Valley View to be located in Beaver County, which falls in Veon’s district.
