October 01, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Little Brown Jug winner Mr. Feelgood was beaten Saturday night at Mohawk in his first start since his victory in the pacing classic. He settled for fifth in an Ontario Sire Stakes Gold elimination.

Instead, Mark Megens and division leader Stormaway stole the victory.

Leaving from post four, Megens engineered fractions of :28.3, :58.2 and 1:26.3 for former Ontario Sire Stakes Gold final champion Stormaway and then shouted, ‘Catch me if you can,’ as he turned for home. Although Doonbeg employed his usual finishing kick, he could not get nearer than a length to Stormaway, who ran off with his third Gold elimination victory in 1:53.1.

Jersey Dan was another length back in third, with Secluded Island and Mr Feelgood rounding out the qualifiers for next Friday’s Gold final.

Dan Megens trains Stormaway for his partners, and the colt’s breeders, Janice Van Nest and Peter Caetano. Through 18 starts, the talented son of Northern Luck has recorded 13 wins, two seconds and one third for earnings of $319,906. Unfortunately, the pacer will be handicapped by post 10 in next week’s Final, while Eagle Luck, Mr Feelgood and Doonbeg benefit from posts two, five, and six, respectively.

In the first elimination, Eagle Luck captured his second elimination trophy with a gate-to-wire effort in 1:52. The Camluck colt and driver Luc Ouellette coasted through fractions of :26.4, :56.1 and 1:24.3 before sprinting home to the one-length decision over Mister Big and Dodgeball.

Fourth and fifth-place finishers Windsong Cruiser and Armbro Domi also advanced to next Friday’s $130,000 Gold final.

Gregg McNair trains Eagle Luck for Frank Dettore. Through 19 starts this season the consistent pacer has posted eight wins, one second and two thirds for earnings of $371,365.

The complete field for the Friday, Oct. 6, Gold final at Mohawk is as follows:
