Mr. Feelgood sixth in Australian debut

Little Brown Jug winner Mr. Feelgood finished sixth in his Australian debut Saturday night, the 6-year-old pacer’s first start since the Classic Series final July 26 at the Meadowlands and later being purchased by Australian interests. Driven by Anthony Butt, Mr. Feelgood led for much of the 2,560-meter (about 1 ˝ miles) race but tired in the stretch and finished sixth.

“I was reasonably happy with his performance,” Butt was quoted afterward about Mr. Feelgood’s first Down-Under effort in the $50,000 Bendigo Cup in Victoria. “He raced like a horse that hadn’t raced for six months, but at the end of the day he was only a length from the winner. So I don’t think he has to improve too much to be competitive with the good horses. He had every chance to win the race, but those six months away from racing just found him out over those last 100 meters.”

The race was won by New Zealand champion Changeover, who closed late to score in a mile rate of 1:58.4.
