Mr. Muscleman made his first racetrack appearance in a year at The Red Mile Wednesday morning, going wire to wire in a 1:59.1 qualifier for driver Brendan Johnson.
Mr. Muscleman clicked off fractions of :29.2, 1:00.3 and 1:31.3 en route to the first of three scheduled qualifiers before making his first start of the year in the Allerage Trot at The Red Mile at the end of the month.
“That’s where we needed to go. We hoped to go around two minutes with him,” said Mr. Muscleman’s trainer Noel Daley.
Mr. Muscleman, who was the 2005 Dan Patch Older Horse of the Year, was sidelined a year ago with a suspensory injury that Daley said took a while to discover. The 6-year-old Muscles Yankee gelding owned by Adam Victor and Son, also had a bone chip removed while recovering from the suspensory injury in his left hind leg.
In the qualifying race following Mr. Muscleman’s race, Meadowlands Pace and Oliver Wendell Holmes winner Artistic Fella romped to a 1:52 mile with Mickey McNichol in the bike. His fractions were :28.2, :56.4 and 1:25.
Trainer Steve Elliott said the Pacific Fella colt owned by Joseph Alborano will start in an early closer at The Red Mile and then be supplemented into the Tattersalls Pace Oct. 7 at The Red Mile.
