With France's Jean Michel Bazire crafting two savvy trips, L'Amiral Mauzun beat Mr. Muscleman by a head in 1:52.3 in the final heat of the Elitlopp Sunday afternoon at the Solvalla racetrack in Stockholm. Ron Pierce took the lead at the start with Mr. Muscleman, but L'Amiral Mauzun wore down the Americans in the homestretch.
Bazire, who drove Moni Maker to her victory in the Prix d'Amerique, started from the rail with L'Amiral Mauzun in the final, but allowed Pierce--who started from post six with Mr. Muscleman--to take control of the race. Citation, who won an elimination, started from post two but did not start quickly and fell behind early.
Mr. Muscleman was wearing a different bridle and new shoes for the final and looked more aggressive in the final. He was pressured early by Going Kronos, who broke stride with about 300 meters left. That opened up the homestretch for the duel between Mr. Muscleman and L'Amiral Mauzon. Red Chili Pirat took third.
The Elitlopp victory is the most prestigious score in L'Amiral Mauzun's career since the 8-year-old is a gelding, and geldings are not permitted to race in France's famed races such as the Prix d'Amerique.
