The 2005 Trotter of the Year Mr Muscleman made his first appearance since June 2007 in a qualifier Tuesday morning at The Red Mile, with the 9 year old finishing third in a 1:55.3 winning mile posted by the 3-year-old colt Waterstone.

Mr. Muscleman won all four of his starts last year before knee and suspensory problems sent him to the sidelines. Trainer Noel Daley earlier said Mr. Muscleman's problems primarily come from his knees. "He's had chips out of his knees," he said. "He had a little problem with the hind suspensory, but 95 percent of his problem is his knee."

Ron Pierce drove Mr. Muscleman in Tuesday's qualifier for Daley. He got away third behind Waterstone, who was driven by trainer Jimmy Takter. Waterstone, who is winless so far in 2008, led through fractions of :30.2, :59.1 and 1:29.1 before trotting a last quarter of :26.2 to draw clear over runner-up Lunar Dream OM (Tim Tetrick) by 4 1/2 lengths. Mr. Muscleman was 7 1/2 lengths behind the winning Waterstone--who was without shoes for the first time in his career--under the wire.

As for Mr. Muscleman, he has earnings of $3.5 million for Adam Victor & Son Stable, with Dan Patch Award honors as the 2003 Three-Year-Old Colt Trotter of the Year, the 2004 Older Trotter of the Year, and the 2005 Older Trotter of the Year and Trotter of the Year.
