Mr. Pine Chip's bro wins

February 15, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Jack N Sam, a 3-year-old half-brother to Stanley Dancer Memorial Trot winner Mr. Pine Chip, broke his maiden Wednesday night at Northfield Park--needing only 2:16.2 over a "good" racetrack to do so! The maiden trot was the opening event on the card and, despite making a break at the start, Jack N Sam recovered to post the three-quarter-length victory over Bob Anjua.

Bred and owned by Joe Sbrocco--as was Mr. Pine Chip 3, 1:52 ($635,870)--Jack N Sam made breaks in his two pari-mutuel starts last year, and also in his first start of 2007. He then had to qualify before lining up behind the gate again on Wednesday.

Frank Harris drove Jack N Sam for trainer Harvey Carter Jr. After making the break behind the gate, Harris directed his charge to the come-from behind victory as fractions of :33.4, 1:09.3 and 1:44 were set by the leading Beautiful Illusion, who finished third.

Jack N Sam is by Like A Prayer out of Sbrocco's mare Miss Pine Chip. Mr. Pine Chip also made breaks his first two lifetime starts before breaking his maiden at Scioto Downs in 2:02.3f.

As for conditions at Northfield Park, which raced Tuesday night despite a blizzard, they improved throughout the evening. Two sub-2:00 miles were recorded, including one 1:58.3 effort.
