The Broward County Sheriff’s Office has reported the robbery and muggings of four people in three separate incidents in the past month at the Isle of Casino and Racing at Pompano Park, including one attack that left a woman with a broken ankle and fractured eye socket.

According to the sheriff’s reports, two of the attacks involved three men who violently grabbed purses and cell phones.

"My pocketbook was over my shoulder and I wasn't going to let go, so they started pulling me and punching me right in the face," 83-year-old, five-feet tall Betty Smith told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel of the Oct. 9 attack on her and a 73-year-old friend that left Smith with a broken nose and black eye. "I was punching back and I kicked him, just not in the spot I was aiming for."

The first parking-lot attack was reported Oct. 5, with a woman suffering a fractured ankle and cracked eye socket. After her attack she crawled back to the casino for help, according to the reports. The other victim was a 50-year-old man who was punched in the face and robbed of $300 by a lone man.

None of the attacks were recorded by security cameras. Also, off-duty sheriff’s deputies are no longer being used to provide security at the site.

"We are comfortable with our security measures and we continually monitor them to see if changes need to be made," Jill Haynes, director of corporate communications at the Isle of Capri’s St. Louis headquarters told the newspaper. "The casino has security cameras in the parking lot in accordance with our state licensing agreement."
